The Spin Shot

Pool players seldom have need for tremendous sidespin, but good three cushion players use it in almost every match. In fact, many pool players don’t even know how to apply it, and the question “œHow do you get so much spin on the ball?” is one-billiard players hear all the time. The answer to the question is simple. To make the cueball spin you not only have to hit it off center, you have to hit the object ball full in the face or very nearly so.

Qualifiication Rounds Over in Fujairah.

Some big names have left for the exits in Fujairah. World 9-Ball Champion Francisco Bustamante was ahead of Daryl Peach 6-4 in the race to seven games and lost that match 7-6. He then had to defeat David Alcaide of Spain to stay alive but failed as Alcaide prevailed 7-3 to send Francisco home. Another much-feared Filipino, Jeff De Luna, has also seen his efforts come to naught after he was surprised by Khaled Al Mutairi of Kuwait 7-5 and then lost 7-6 to Takhti Zarekani of Iran 7-6.

Day Two at World 8-Ball Championships

Our second day at the WPA World 8-Ball Championships in Fujairah, UAE was one of several surprises as some strong players have now been eliminated from the event. Mark Gray of the UK, Jeong Young Hwa of Korea, and Ruslan Chinakhov of Russia have all seen their efforts here come to an end. Carlos Cabella of Spain may never wish to see another Bustamante. He was knocked into the one-loss side by Francisco Bustamante and then was eliminated by Joven Bustamante.

George Osipovitch wins C/D at Gotham City Billiards’ Tri-State event. George went undefeated through the field of players. His trail to victory, included wins over John Egeln 6 – 2; James DeGiosafatto 6 – 4; Doreen Verna 6 – 4; Nicholas Chan 6 – 5; and Ralph Panuzzo 6 – 5 for the Hot Seat .

APA RECEIVES GUINNESS WORLD RECORD AMONGST RECENT ACCOLADES
APA National Team Championships Recognized as World’s Largest Pool Tournament

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (February 3, 2011) “” Two thousand ten was yet another banner year for the American Poolplayers Association (APA).  In October, APA Founders Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart were inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame.

Then late last year, the 2010 APA National Team Championship, held in August in Las Vegas, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the  “œworld’s largest pool tournament.”Â  Shortly thereafter, APA set yet another membership milestone with a record 270,366 members in 2010.

2011 Master of the Table, Shane Van Boening

The All-Around Champion (Master of the Table) was named Saturday night after the 9-ball semi-final matches. Shane Van Boening, winning the One Pocket Division and by winning one of the 9-ball semi-finals (guaranteeing a minimum of 2nd place) locked down the title of Master of the Table. The runner up for Master of the table was Alex Pagulayan the winner of the Banks Division. Shane received $20,000 for Master of the Table.

The American  Cuemakers Association (ACA) is proud to announce its latest inductee into the ACA Hall of Fame and its 2011 “Cuemaker of the Year.”  The ACA was formed in 1992 to promote the American made cue as a unique collectable art form,  to establish a standard of excellence in the art of cuemaking, to educate the public, and to work with other organizations whose objectives are compatible with those of the ACA.

Gary Murgia wins at Sandcastle Billiards’ B/D Tri-State event. Gary remained undefeated throughout the tournament. His trail to victory, included wins over Soner Bulut 7 – 3; Antonio Navarro 8 – 7; Brian Cap 7 – 5; Peter Brennan 7 – 6;  and Pat DiBuono, who is no stranger to the winner’s circle, 7 – 3 for the Hot Seat.
