Dennis Orcullo on Top of the World.

Our final day in Fujairah began with a playoff for third place between Darren Appleton and David Alcaide. Alcaide dominated the match as Appleton only came to the table sparingly. Alcaide won 9-2.

Then it was time for the Championship match between Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines and Niels Feijen of the Netherlands. Orcullo won the lag and broke and ran the first rack. It then became the Orcullo break ad run show as repeated this performance ever and over until the score stood at 5-0. Orcullo had to play in local qualifiers to get into the tournament and he was making the most of the opportunity. When he broke the rack in game 6 he scratched in the side pocket and Feijen had his first opportunity.

Double Jump

There are a lot of trick shots that are practical and make sense to learn, simply because of their likelihood of coming up during actual gameplay.  A lot of shots, however, are simply for fun.  For instance, most of the shots involving multiple balls are merely for show.  On the other hand, though, a lot of the stroke shots we perform in competition and exhibitions are truly exaggerations of strokes you would utilize in everyday games.  Rarely, if ever, would you shoot the passing lane masse in a game.  You are, though, occasionally frozen to an object ball and might shoot through it with spin.

The Spin Shot

Pool players seldom have need for tremendous sidespin, but good three cushion players use it in almost every match. In fact, many pool players don’t even know how to apply it, and the question “œHow do you get so much spin on the ball?” is one-billiard players hear all the time. The answer to the question is simple. To make the cueball spin you not only have to hit it off center, you have to hit the object ball full in the face or very nearly so.

Qualifiication Rounds Over in Fujairah.

Some big names have left for the exits in Fujairah. World 9-Ball Champion Francisco Bustamante was ahead of Daryl Peach 6-4 in the race to seven games and lost that match 7-6. He then had to defeat David Alcaide of Spain to stay alive but failed as Alcaide prevailed 7-3 to send Francisco home. Another much-feared Filipino, Jeff De Luna, has also seen his efforts come to naught after he was surprised by Khaled Al Mutairi of Kuwait 7-5 and then lost 7-6 to Takhti Zarekani of Iran 7-6.

Our second day at the WPA World 8-Ball Championships in Fujairah, UAE was one of several surprises as some strong players have now been eliminated from the event. Mark Gray of the UK, Jeong Young Hwa of Korea, and Ruslan Chinakhov of Russia have all seen their efforts here come to an end. Carlos Cabella of Spain may never wish to see another Bustamante. He was knocked into the one-loss side by Francisco Bustamante and then was eliminated by Joven Bustamante.
