Carom Café hosted a wonderful Open tournament this past weekend which was a 15-player round-robin event. That means that every player gets to play all the other players once for a total of 14 matches for each player over a 3-day period. It was a lot of billiards.

Event promoter and host Charlie Williams has made time out to eliminate the best playing pro Roberto Gomez of the Philippines. Gomez was the #1 seed with only 3 total games lost in the entire tournament thus far, while Williams made it through to this stage with 26 games total lost at #32 seed.

Yu Ram Cha defeated France’s Reda Belhaj 10-2 and then edged out famed Black Widow Jeanette Lee 10-8 to advance with only 48 players left. Allison Fisher defeated Spanish Woman’s champ Amalia Matas 10-2 and will face Dan Heidrich to qualify.

The nail in the coffin was Allison Fisher versus Filipino hot shot Lee Van Corteza. Fisher, hailed to be the top women’s player in history, looked strong at a 3-0 lead, but the tables quickly turned as she was outplayed by the Filipino and succumbed 10-6.

Among the full field of 112 players at the 9th Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship, there are 15 women who have decided to brave up against the vastly male fielded event. On Day 1 of the event, two ladies struck first blood against the men. Jasmin Ouschan of Austria and Vivian Villarreal of USA both overpowered the male counterparts in the first round.

HOLLAND’S NICK van den Berg became the first player through to the semi-finals of the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters as he held off the challenge of Johnny Archer to claim an 8-5 victory at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.
It was nip and tuck for the first ten racks before van den Berg pulled away in the closing stages. The Dutchman opened up an early 2-0 lead but returned the table to Archer when he scratched in the third game.

Yu Ram Cha Takes on the Men at the World Pool Masters

Las Vegas, Nevada- 21 year old billiard sensation Yu Ram Cha of Korea has been invited as the sole woman entrant of the 2009 World Pool Masters. The event takes place at the Riviera Hotel and Casino this weekend May 8-10 and is produced by Matchroom Sport, a leading force in billiard promotions. The World Pool Masters has had a long history of famous champions such as Ralf Souquet, Thomas Engert, Raj Hundal, and defending champion Alex Pagulayan. Sixteen men are invited each year, with last year being the first time a woman was invited in Jasmin Ouschan of Austria. This year Yu Ram Cha was selected.
