Shuff Claims National Championship Series 8-Ball Title

The inaugural National Championship Series 8-Ball event took place February 13-15 at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas, NV. 56 hopefuls arrived for their shot at the cash prize and opportunity to represent the U.S. in the World 8-Ball Championships in Dubai. This tournament was not open to the public. Players competed in qualifiers held across the country over the past few months for their chance to participate. Qualifiers were held up until the weekend prior, in attempt to fill the 64-player field.

The semi final matches started right on schedule with the 20 players remaining after the qualification rounds. Each match presented the finest in 3- cushion poise and skill being demonstrated.

The 13th annual Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament (“œSwanee”) was held February 7-8, 2009 at Hollywood Billiards in Hollywood, California with a total prize fund of $16,600.

Hollywood Billiards is a nice room with a great atmosphere. The spacious billiard room has 28 Gold Crown III tables, is two levels with an open area upstairs which overlooks the action happening downstairs. The lower level tables have tight pockets and the upper level tables have larger drop pockets.

After 2 days of sterling play, 20 players from the original field of 42 made it to 4 flights of 5 players each for the semi final rounds. Event highlights from the qualification rounds revealed 6 players with perfect 6-0 records ““ Pedro Piedrabuena, Mazin Shooni, Michael Kang, Felipe Razon, Sonny Cho, and defending champion, Miguel Torres. The balance of the semi-final field demonstrated great resolve on the road to the championship finals.

The USBA 2009 National 3-Cushion Championships is now underway with a field of 42 players from all over the country at Carom Café Billiards in Flushing, NY.
Defending National Champion ““ Miguel Torres”¨2008 Runner-up ““ Pedro Piedrabuena along with Mazin Shooni, Sonny Cho, Hugo Patino and Michael Kang are the six seeded players.

Format in the Prielims will be six flights of 7 players. Race to 25, with 3 top players of each flight advancing along with the 2 top 4th place winners making it 20 players in the semi-finals.

Horseshoe Casino and Hotel, a new venue for the DCC, hosted the eleventh Annual Derby City Classic. The annual convention has been in existence since 1997. Diamond Billiard Products, manufacturer of Diamond-brand pool tables, the official table of the US Open Nine-ball Championship, is the title sponsor, and the lead tournament promoter is Greg Sullivan. Over $100,000 is added to the tournament payouts. During the eight-day-long convention, competition is held in three major disciplines, bank pool, nine-ball, and one-pocket. A Master of the Table title is awarded each year to an individual player who participates in all three disciplines, and is determined by an ascending point scale and high quality of play, with a prize of $25,000.

It was day two of the tournament and he was on the b-side. He had played poorly, missing shots and hooking himself. He admitted that he hadn’t played well, but all he could talk about was how much he hated that heavy bar table cue ball. It didn’t do what he wanted and he kept getting into trouble. Being more accustomed to the red circle cue ball, he was having difficultly adjusting to the heavier bar ball and the smaller tables. He was complaining about the conditions.

This issue I want to show three easy set-up shots that will surely impress the passer-by. In my shows of “œEric Yow’s Trick Shot Madness” I perform a variety of shots, some easy, many hard, and everything in between.
