Pedro Piedrabuena wins final: 3.750 average
Pedro Piedrabuena played a great final in Maywood.
MAYWOOD – The 40-year-old Pedro Piedrabuena from San Diego in Calyfornia has won the Open USBA three cushion tournament in Maywood. In the finals he defeated Hugo Pattino, the number one on the ranking, in a magnificent match: 30 points in eight innings (30-16).
The tournament, with a total prize money of $ 17.000, was played in the Eight ball billiards center in Maywood and was part of the Open tournament series of the USBA.
Forty players were divided into 5 groups of 8 players, playing round robin. The top 2 finishers from each group advanced to the semifinals. The top USBA-ranked A-players were seeded into the qualification groups, one per group.
Shooni at Shooters
Shooters, a major pool room just outside of Kansas City, was host to 3-cushion billiards star Mazin Shooni on May 20. Mazin conducted a clinic for four local players””Travis Gallup, Stan Lombardo, Bob Mansky, and Dennis Reinecker””in the afternoon, and that evening he put on an exhibition before an attentive and appreciative audience. Both events were on Shooter’s newly recovered Gabriels Imperator table.
Kick-back strategy
The game is eight-ball and you have the solids. The 8-ball is blocking the corner pocket. It wouldn’t help to make the 7-ball, and while there are various ways to play safe off the right side of the 3-ball, they don’t improve your chances, and they give your opponent a chance to play safe in return. An ingenious play is to hit the 3-ball squarely with low backspin so that it banks off the end rail and back into cueball.
Pedro, wins 2nd year in a row Champion of Champions
Pedro Piedrabuena repeated as the Champion of Champions with a stellar 35 to 33 win over Hugo Patino highlighted by a run of 16.  Pedro was clearly the best over the four-day event, losing only once and posting a 1.440 grand average. Hugo suffered two loses and had the second highest average at 1.417. Trailing 17 to 8, Pedro started his run. When it was over, he led 24 to 17. Hugo seemed dazed for a few innings as Pedro built his lead but then Pedro faltered. The last three billiards were elusive, and Hugo staged a come back. At 34 to 33, Hugo missed a long-short-long shot but left Pedro with all three balls in a line. After pondering the shot for nearly a minute, Pedro played an up-down shot (long, short, long) for the win. Finishing third was Miguel Torres with a record of 8-2 and an average of 1.281. More to come later this week.

THE JUMP SHOT
The Jump Shot
The shot in this Diagram is by no means as hard as it looks. The idea is to shoot with an elevated cue into a ball frozen to a rail and then jump back over the second ball, going around the table, as shown to score. I don’t mean to imply that it is easy, which is why I have rolled up my sleeve in the drawing, but once a good player gets the hang of it he may be able to make it one time in three. It helps to use a bit of draw as well as left English on the cueball, otherwise the cueball will slow up on its way to the other end of the table.
